2015 Rincon Vineyard Pinot Noir

The Rincon Vineyard is the home vineyard where Don Talley planted the first vines of Talley Vineyards in 1982 and where the winery is located. Consisting of two hillsides rising from the floor of the Arroyo Grande Valley, the clay calcareous soils of the West Rincon Vineyard yield wines with distinctive mineral and iron notes.
Light burgundy in appearance, the 2015 vintage of Rincon Vineyard Pinot Noir is ruby in color and offers aromas of strawberry, herb, and cinnamon spice. The palate is soft and plush and exudes vibrant notes of cherry, ripe raspberry, and green tea. Try pairing this pinot noir with ahi tuna with miso glaze or grilled pork tenderloin.

Yields in 2015 in Coastal San Luis Obispo County were the lowest since 2011 due to inclement spring weather which caused poor fruit set, as well as the effects of the ongoing drought. Warm and dry summer conditions coupled with the small yield, resulted in an early harvest which was completed in our estate vineyards on September 22, 2015. The wines produced in 2015 are similar to those produced in the immediately preceding vintages of 2013 and 2014, emphasizing harmony and balanced acidity, though with more concentration and structured tannins due to the low yields.

The Rincon bottling is always my favorite although East Rincon and Rosemary's can give it a run for the money. The 2015 is very typical of this site with dark cherry and plum fruits and nuances of spice, herbs and mushrooms. Deffinately a Califonia style pinot noir but with serious nods to Burgundy in France. This wine improves for 10-15 years in bottle for those who can wait. 2006 is showing very well at this time.
