Talley Vineyards

2014 Rincon Vineyard Chardonnay

2014 Rincon Vineyard Chardonnay

Produced entirely from own rooted chardonnay planted by Don Talley in 1984 at the top of the Eastern hillside of the Rincon Vineyard, a site marked by calcareous clay soils where vines struggle to produce small crops of intensely flavored grapes. The 2014 Rincon Vineyard Chardonnay offers delicate honeysuckle aromas infused with hints of wet stone. Meyer lemon and soft mineral notes are predominant on the palate leading to a chalky finish. This chardonnay pairs beautifully with grilled chicken seasoned with lemon and rosemary.

Professional Reviews

Vinous, September 2016.  Very light gold. Smoke- and mineral-tinged orchard fruit, melon and fennel aromas show impressive clarity and pick up a sexy floral nuance with air. Chewy, energetic and pure, offering palate-staining pear nectar and honeysuckle flavors along with deeper suggestions of honey and vanilla. Reveals an exotic iodine quality on the incisive finish, which clings with outstanding tenacity and resonating florality.

Robert Parker, August 2016. Made in a prettier, tropical fruit and medium-bodied style, the 2014 Chardonnay Talley Vineyard Rincon (aged 15 months in 16% new French oak) offers lots of white flowers, citrus blossom, mint and salty minerality as well as medium-bodied richness and a pure, elegant style.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
The 2014 vintage marked the third year of the California drought. Warm and dry conditions resulted in the earliest harvest start date, August 1, in the history of Talley Vineyards. At 9 inches, total rainfall was less than 50% of the average for Coastal San Luis Obispo County. Ideal growing conditions during bloom time in the spring afforded excellent fruit set with very little mildew or botrytis pressure during the remainder of the season. The wines produced in 2014 share many of the characteristics that made the 2012 and 2013 vintages so appealing:  charm, elegance and balance.

The Oregon Coast. Blue sky, cold water. A pear and a bottle of Talley 2014 Rincon Chardonnay. This is everything I imagined retirement to be. The wine is delightful. Fresh apples and honeysuckle. Gentle flavors of oak that don't intrude. I spent three hours walking on the beach with my wife. My lungs are filled with salty air, my hair with sand. The pear was a nice touch. I'm on my second glass now, so this is no longer a mere wine tasting. I'm drinking this wine. I don't have to spar with tannins. No jokes about butter. Chardonnay. Nicely done.
