Talley Vineyards

2014 East Rincon Vineyard Pinot Noir

2014 East Rincon Vineyard Pinot Noir

Unique in the East Rincon Vineyard, which is almost entirely planted to chardonnay, the tiny sections of pinot noir produce some of the most refined wines in the Talley Vineyards portfolio. These are the oldest vines we farm, dating to our original plantings in 1984. The 2014 vintage of East Rincon Vineyard Pinot Noir is light garnet in hue and offers aromas of wet cement and sour cherry layered with crisp mineral undertones. Flavors of dark cherry are enhanced by spicy and floral notes associated with whole-cluster fermentation. The finish is expansive, yet firm. Try it with baked goat cheese crostini or grilled steak.

Professional Reviews

Vinous, September 2016. Lurid ruby-red. Deep-pitched black raspberry, cherry and spicecake aromas show excellent clarity and complementary suggestions of cola, mocha and woodsmoke. Sweet, seamless and penetrating, offering concentrated red and dark berry, floral pastille and cola flavors underscored by juicy acidity. Manages to be powerful as well as graceful, closing with superb energy and smooth tannins that build slowly and add framework to the densely packed fruit.

California Grapevine, January 2017.  Medium-light to medium ruby; attractive, deep, black cherry and red berry fruit aroma with hints of baking spices and forest floor; medium-full body; deep, rich, spicy, nicely balanced, red fruit lavors with herbal notes and bright acidity; medium to medium-full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Deserves a few more years of bottle aging. Very highly recommended.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
The 2014 vintage marked the third year of the California drought. Warm and dry conditions resulted in the earliest harvest start date, August 1, in the history of Talley Vineyards. At 9 inches, total rainfall was less than 50% of the average for Coastal San Luis Obispo County. Ideal growing conditions during bloom time in the spring afforded excellent fruit set with very little mildew or botrytis pressure during the remainder of the season. The wines produced in 2014 share many of the characteristics that made the 2012 and 2013 vintages so appealing: charm, elegance and balance.
