93+ Points. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar. Vibrant ruby-red. A heady bouquet evokes red berry and floral qualities, along with suave incense and herb nuances. Deep, focused and pure, with outstanding power to its raspberry, cherry and candied rose flavors. Becomes spicier and smokier with air and closes with superb focus and lingering florality. Impeccably balanced pinot with the depth and structure to reward long-term cellaring.

Medium ruby; attractive, intense, smoky, cranberry and cherry fruit aroma with hints of mushrooms and forest floor; medium-full to full body; big, concentrated, textured, firmly structured, black cherry and dark berry fruit flavors; medium-full tannin with some grip on the finish; lingering aftertaste. Deserves several more years of bottle aging. Very highly recommended. 14.2% alcohol; 376 cases; 100% PN; released September 2011. (Group Score: 16.4, 1/0/1; My Score: 17 [92/100], seventh place)

Vineyard Notes

The 2009 year began with a cold winter which led to some frost damage. Bud break was very even and the remainder of the year was marked by mild temperatures and healthy, even vine growth. An intense heat wave occurred in early September causing many grapes to ripen simultaneously. The harvest in the Arroyo Grande Valley was slightly larger than average and the quality of the fruit was exceptional with concentrated, intense flavors.

Hand harvested estate pinot noir grapes from Rosemary's Vineyard, fermented with native yeasts in open top fermentors.
