Deep garnet in color, this wine has a perfumey bouquet layered with sweet notes of black cherry, licorice and cola with hints of eucalyptus and tobacco.  The mid-palate is velvety in texture with soft flavors of black fruit and mineral that express the masculine attributes of the Rincon Vineyard.  This elegant pinot noir pairs nicely with rack of lamb and mushroom risotto.

Wine Profile
92 Points. Vinous, by Antonio Galloni, July 31, 2013. The 2011 Pinot Noir East Rincon Vineyard is the first wine to emerge from a small parcel within Rincon planted in 1984. Sweet floral notes meld into crushed red berries in a Pinot that is all about subtlety and understated grace. The use of 25% whole clusters adds perfume, lift and lightness. The style is a bit fleeting, but all the elements are in the right place. Pinot has a rare ability to be highly transparent with regards to site, and this is another great example of that.

93 Points. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Oct/Nov 2013. Dark ruby color.  Dark berries, cherry and Indian spices on the deeply scented nose.  In a distinctly more broad-shouldered, masculine style than I expect from Talley, but in no way heavy or brooding.  Spicy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors are enlivened by a juicy blood orange quality and a hint of cracked pepper.  Finishes with building sweetness, subtle tannins and excellent persistence.
Vineyard Notes
The 2011 year began with above average rainfall in Southern San Luis Obispo County. Though we were spared the late spring frost that affected other areas, fruit set was reduced by wet spring conditions and yields were about 30% below average. One of the coolest summers on record resulted in long hang time and grapes with high natural acidity.

We opened the 2011 East Rincon Vineyard Pinot in July 2013. After breathing for an hour, the nose was moderate, clean, full of red fruits. On the palate, the flavors were intense. Lots of cherry, strawberry, red currants and some minerals. Smooth velvety tannins; well balanced acidity. A very long palate. The wine should lay down several years before peaking. I'll predict it receives ratings in the mid- to high 90s.
