May 24, 2006: The Judgment of Paris, 30th Anniversary

May 24, 2006 (5:00pm - 10:00pm)
The most famous wine tasting in history, the “Judgment of Paris,” was recreated in 2006 to commemorate its 30th anniversary with tasting panels in both the United States and the United Kingdom, in association with the wine writer and author who created the original event, Steven Spurrier.

The first Judgement of Paris, held in 1976, sent shockwaves through the wine world when nine French wine experts declared through a blind tasting that wines from California were as good as, or better than the best of the wines from French vineyards. Such was the standard of the California wines that some judges professed to be unable even to discern which wines were French and which American.

The nine California wine experts for the 2006 panel included Dan Berger, Anthony Dias Blue, Stephen Brook, Wilfred Jaeger, Peter Marks MW, Frank Prial, Paul Roberts MS, Andrea Immer Robinson MS and Christian Vanneque, one of the original judges from the 1976 tasting. Patricia Gallagher served as the USA Panel Chair.

The European tasting panel included France’s Michel Bettane, Britain’s Michael Broadbent MW, Hugh Johnson, Matthew Jukes, Jane Macquitty, David Peppercorn MW, Jancis Robinson MW, Brian St Pierre and Serena Sutcliffe MW. Steven Spurrier served as the UK Panel Chair.

The judges simultaneously swirled, sniffed and spit their way through a blind tasting of the original reds sampled at the legendary tasting in Paris, as well as a comparative tasting of younger vintages of red and white wines from the same and similar estates.

First Flight
The First Flight consisted of the original Judgment of Paris wines, including six cabernets from California: Clos du Val 1972, Freemark Abbey 1969, Heitz Martha’s Vineyard 1970, Mayacamas 1971, Ridge Montebello 1971 and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973; and four Bordeaux: Châteaux Haut-Brion 1970, Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases 1971, Chateau Montrose 1970 and Chateau Mouton-Rothschild 1970.

Second Flight
Chardonnays: Chateau Montelena, Mount Eden Vineyards, Patz & Hall Hyde Vineyard, Peter Michael Winery, Ramey and Talley Vineyards. White Burgundies included: Drouhin Beaune Clos de Mouches, Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet Caillerets, Latour Corton-Charlemagne, Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Pucelles, Ramonet Batard Montrachet, Roulot Meursault Charmes

Flight 2 Results: Talley Vineyards 2002 Rosemary's Vineyard Chardonnay was selected as the top Chardonnay in this flight with the combined scores of judges from both the US and UK.
